Becoming the Expert of Your Own Body

What if movement was bigger than exercise, but in a less overwhelming and practical sense? What if you knew how to incorporate movement into your everyday life, not because you feel like you have to or should, but because you know exactly what your body needs to feel amazing at the end of every day?

I like to think of myself as a movement coach, similar to a life coach or a nutritionist combined, but for your movement life and 'diet'. Most of us...

How to Achieve Your Deep Squat

Let’s talk squats!

Squatting is what is called a natural movement. A movement that you would see someone do to live their life if we didn’t have all the chairs, cars, running water and modern conveniences.

For many of my clients a squat is a personal goal of there’s, and I love helping them move towards that goal!

The squat also is a movement that requires a lot of moving parts to be lined up in our body to actually happen, a unique combination of mobility and strength.

I...

Intuitive Movement

I have been processing this phrase of late ‘intuitive’. This idea of learning to trust yourself and to allow your body’s needs to direct the choices you make. This idea of intuitive eating has been starting to gain traction. That there is no one size fits all approach to food, that it’s dependent on your individual genetics, lifestyle and goals. The idea that we can’t cookie cutter a diet, caloric intake and all the micro and macro nutrients that every individual...

Clothing and Movement..... Which Influences the Other?

Have you ever NOT done something because of what you’re wearing? “Sorry, I’m in a skirt…”, or you realize you can’t lift your arms overhead or give that big hug you’d like to, or you can’t walk comfortably because of what’s on your feet, because what you’re wearing prevents that movement?

I think most of us have experienced this, and I know this because most of our modern clothing doesn’t take movement into much...

Is Your Pelvic Floor Loose?

We hear this term a lot, 'loose' to describe the pelvic floor, especially after women have babies. Our pelvic floors are often likened to a rubber band, and once it looses its elasticity - game over. Maybe, just maybe you can regain a little bit of 'tightness' by doing thousands of kegels a day (hang in there, I'll for sure chat about kegels in an other post!).

What does 'loose' mean when it comes to talking about pelvic floors? Often, it is referring to several symptoms - incontinence...

Are Your Hamstrings Really Tight?

blog muscle length tutorial Aug 03, 2018

I'm a body movement teacher and one of the things I do is pay quite a bit of attention to the way people talk about their bodies. "I have tight hamstrings" "My neck and shoulders are always really tight" or "My calf muscles are so short!". We make pretty definitive statements about our body and musculature. I'd like to discuss the idea of 'tight' muscles.

We have this idea that our muscles have a certain amount of length to them, a specific amount of give, and when that length is reached, the...

Tips for Hiking with Children

blog kids motherhood movement Jun 04, 2018

I'm a mom to a million children. Ok, actually 4 boys, but that feels like a million sometimes. I feel like I have gotten quite a bit of practice with hiking with groups of children. These are few things I've learned, some of them the hard way, but I've been willing to take one for the team. You're welcome.

It's spring and we're back in the swing of getting outside more consistently and for longer distances. Our current crew includes 4 kids, ages 3-9 years old. So, here's a few tips for...

Minimalist Shoes... Why Are They Awesome?

blog minimalist shoes Apr 06, 2018

"Don't your feet hurt in those?" and "Can't you feel everything in those shoes, like all the rocks and sticks and all?" or some such variation is the most common question I get when I wear my weird Vibram five finger shoes.

Funny Story. I always thought that the Vibram five finger shoes looked SO weird and that I would NEVER wear them... Ha ha! The universe has a funny way about bringing things back around. Never say never my friends.....

Anyway, these shoes always get me noticed and...

Spring Cleaning the Feet

April is Foot Health Awareness Month! Our feet are amazing parts of our body we don't really give much thought to, unless they are in pain.

The feet are just plain awesome! They have 26 bones, 33 joints and loads of intrinsic muscles. And we tend to encase them in immobile shoes, that place our feet (and therefore our entire bodies) in awkward positions and squish our toes together. This can impact all kinds of dysfunctions (read: bunions, plantar fasciitis, etc.) from the feet on up.

It's...

Ya'll, I did a minimalist shoe DIY thing....

I'm a DIY'er. I love saving money, repurposing material, and using my hands to create something. I also have 4 growing boys to keep in shoes. This was the starting point to my attempt at making our own minimalist shoes.

Now, there are some AMAZING minimalist shoe companies out there that I fully support, Soft Star Shoes, being one of them. But again, with these healthy amazing kiddo's growing non-stop - my budget asked that I get a little bit creative.

So, I've had this idea in the back...
